Building Empathy

In the spirit of giving and receiving thanks, we would like to give our friends and families some ideas for building empathy. We can build empathy through three easy community projects. The following projects are great tools to do with your little student:
  1. Assemble Meals: while our students are very young they can learn to make simple meals for friends, neighbors, or even the elderly. If meal prep isn’t for you then taking your child to donate canned goods to the local food pantry or “meals on wheels” is a wonderful way to build empathy.
  2. Care for animals: If you are lucky enough to have a pet at home then letting your child feed, walk or brush the family pet is a great idea. If you do not have a pet at home then why not model these things with your child’s favorite stuffed animal? Caring for others builds empathy.
  3. Make a craft: every child loves to do arts and crafts. Not there are many charities that love to get hand made cards from children to send to our troops during the holidays. This is a lovely activity you all can share while doing something kind for the men and women who serve our country.
Remember by teaching your little student to build empathy for others they are learning to be kind and considerate. The best way to teach them is to pitch in and do things together. Not only will you be teaching empathy but you will be building a stronger bond with your child.
